Landscape Rock

Successfully Landscaping with Rock & Stone: Incorporation of rock in the landscape, whether it is a focal point or add-in to the yards natural beauty, boulders and rocks add character to any landscape. Try not to use them to cover up things you are trying to hide. Each piece needs to be placed with purpose for looks, design and balance. When you start adding hardscapes to your landscape plan be sure to include where each large rock or boulder will be placed for the best effect.

Natural Stones

Stones that have a natural appeal to you are the best one to buy. When you consider the size you are looking for and where that stone will be placed, you will be well on your way to a natural, well blended landscape.

How far should you bury your rock in the ground? The depth depends upon the overall landscape rock chosen. As a rule a very large boulder would be planted deeper than a smaller one. Four to six inches is a good depth for the rock base to be buried. Dig a spot a little bit larger than the size of the base of the rock and then place the rock into it. Then backfill some of the dirt into the spot around the rock and then you are done.

Does size matter?

You bet it does! When you are out to buy landscape rock, be sure you consider the size, weight and placement in your landscape. Too often the cost of the rock isn't as much as the delivery and placement fees.

Ask Yourself:
  • How will the rock get to its destination in the landscape?
  • Will I need special equipment, like a loader or bobcat to place the boulder in the scenery.
  • Is the equipment that is going to move this rock going to uproot or destroy any landscaping I have already done?

Once you have selected the boulder or rock of your choice - does it have a predominant side (one side you like better than the other)? This is called the show or display side of the rock, the face you will be displaying in your landscape.

When choosing rocks and boulders, try to think of how they might look in a natural environment and then try to work it out in your landscape, to imitate nature. The next time you are out for a walk or biking keep an eye out for any large boulders used in the landscape of nature. Notice how they sit in the ground and then try to get the landscaping rock in your yard to look as natural.
